The time has finally come for the fleet tracking industry to officially transfer from 3G to 4G devices. Beginning in 2022, all major network providers, including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint, will be discontinuing 3G service to all channels. While some may shut off 3G faster than others, it is inevitable that fleet managers must update to 4G ELDs before February 22, 2022. The longer one waits, the slower and less reliable their devices will become.
The 3G shutdown has been in the works for quite some time, and with 4G and 5G networks on the rise, services have decided to bring an end to the lower performing network. AT&T in specific is planning to replace 3G towers with 4G and 5G towers in effort to improve their coverage rather than have them obsolete. This means that our 4G ELDs will have improved service as well. Although some may view this in a negative light, the transition to end 3G will lead to higher performing ELDs and increased safety for truckers and fleet operators.
AT&T has confirmed their 3G sunset, “We plan to end service on our 3G wireless networks on February 22, 2022. This date is firm due to the complexity of this transition…”, while T-Mobile/Sprint has just decided to carry out 3G for slightly longer, stating “We have made the decision to extend our deadline for the CDMA sunset by three months to March 31, 2022.”
Here at Gentrifi, we understand that the process it takes to upgrade and replace each ELD can be stressful. We make it as easy as possible for clients to have a smooth transition, including a $100 rebate and waiving our $25 activation fee.
We offer two 4G ELD options for our clients to upgrade to. Our higher end ELD is our Intelligent Vehicle Gateway (IVG), while a more basic option is our XRS. Our IVGs are an industrial grade tethered ELD with a high resolution touch screen and wifi. With our IVG, we have many add-ons including critical event reporting, GPS position reporting, Omnitracs service portal, vehicle inspection reports, third-party integration, and more. Our XRS, on the other hand, is mobile and tablet friendly. They can be installed in less than 10 minutes and are operated through the Omnitracs app on one’s android mobile phone or tablet. Although less advanced, they share similar features with the IVG including tracking and recording driver hours.
You may be asking yourself how to upgrade your devices without putting a strain on your fleet, but with gentrifi you won’t have to worry about a difficult transition. We have an easy step by step process to make upgrading easy for our customers:
First you will answer a few questions including your contact information and fleet size to get in touch. Once you get in contact, our sales representatives will ask you about your needs and give you a more detailed run down about our 4G ELDs on a call. Once you have decided on an ELD and quantity, our sales representatives will send the information over to our product manager who will ship it over in a timely manner.
After the items are shipped and installed, our team will send out a provision form to set up the devices on our network. This network allows you to track your vehicles and access all additions you purchased with your ELD. We stay in touch with you throughout the entire process and have a great support team you can reach out to as well.
If customers do not upgrade to a 4G ELD soon enough, they will not be compliant under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This means companies could face fines exceeding $10,000.00 per non-compliant vehicle. Considering you’ll be left without an ELD and thousands of dollars in federal fines, it’s best to just upgrade to a 4G device as soon as possible. It is easy to do this by contacting one of our representatives and seeing which ELD works best for your needs, and we’ll take it from there.
